By the end of 1979 the German Federal Railways had a total of 5029 suburban traffic coaches in use which were nick-named ”silverfish“ since the exterior of these coaches is not painted but shows the original aluminum colour (with peacock tail pattern). Some of the class B and almost all class BD coaches have a driver’s cab at one end for push-pull service.
The locomotive is remotely controlled from this cab which has been enlarged into a roomy driver’s compartment in some coaches. Locomotives suitable for this push-pull train service are class 111 (43412/43413/43414) as well as class 215 (43417/43418).
